We sat down with our Consultant, Janet Mulu, to discuss the importance of being a B Leader. Janet shared her perspective on how B Leaders bring purpose-driven strategies to talent development and organisational growth. As a sustainability professional, she highlighted the crucial role B Corps and impact-driven companies play in driving responsible leadership within the Trade & Economic Development (TED) and ESG spaces.

How does being a B Leader shape your approach to working with Oxford HR and its clients?

B Leaders are sustainability professionals equipped with the tools and knowledge to support businesses through the B Corp certification process. This expertise is invaluable in my work at Oxford HR, particularly in Trade & Economic Development (TED) and ESG-focused leadership.

As a B Leader, I bring a structured, impact-driven approach to talent strategy and organizational development. My ability to assess ESG performance and sustainability leadership enables me to align Oxford HR’s clients with leaders who drive purpose-driven transformation. In the TED space, where ethical governance, responsible investment, and sustainability are essential, my B Leader training and expertise in B Corp principles play a crucial role in helping organisations build teams that drive long-term impact, resilience, and stakeholder trust.

What role do B Corps and impact-driven companies play in advancing the B Corp movement and responsible leadership in the TED & ESG space?

B Corps and impact-driven companies are reshaping the business landscape by proving that financial success and sustainability can coexist. In the Trade & Economic Development (TED) and ESG space, these companies drive ethical supply chains, advance fair trade practices, and foster inclusive economic growth. They set the standard for transparency, social responsibility, and environmental impact, influencing investors, policymakers, and global trade dynamics.

Their leadership in the B Corp movement also strengthens responsible governance and ESG integration across industries. By embedding purpose alongside profit, they encourage conventional businesses to adopt more sustainable and socially responsible practices. Through my work at Oxford HR, I help these organizations further accelerate the shift towards a more equitable and sustainable global economy.

What’s one key lesson from the B Leader programme that you’ve found most valuable in your work?

One of the most valuable insights from the B Leader programme is the significance of measuring what truly matters. The B Impact Assessment (BIA) offers a robust framework for assessing and enhancing business performance beyond financial metrics, emphasising governance, workforce, community, environment, and customers.

In my work within TED and ESG, this structured approach has been essential in guiding businesses and leadership teams to define clear goals and ensure accountability. It also plays a crucial role in identifying and developing leaders who can drive meaningful and lasting sustainable transformation.
