The Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer (CRMO) is an outstanding role for a strategic, results focused, and fearless leader eager to craft and shape the CARE Canada brand. Responsible for CARE Canada’s externally facing initiatives, the Revenue and Marketing Unit is fundamental to our goal of inspiring Canadians to join us, and to do so with a brave and bold voice, innovative partnerships and sustainable, balanced revenue sources.
The CRMO is the senior leader responsible for CARE Canada’s revenue generation, marketing and communications initiatives. The leader of this Unit must have experience in both functional areas and understand the interplay between them and the other areas of the organization for us to be successful. This leader is responsible for creating and enabling a multi-year plan that sees CARE Canada broaden and deepen its revenue generation across institutional (public), philanthropic and private sources. They will also craft and shape our brand within the Canadian ‘marketplace’, bringing voice to our call for a gender-just future for all women and girls.
A member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), this leader serves internally as a mentor, motivator and enabler, with the staff and the Board of Directors. They also serve externally as an ambassador, champion, and thought leader with CARE Canada’s partners, funders and donors, with our peers, and within the CARE International family.
CARE Canada recognizes the powerful role of markets and sees an emerging opportunity to work with private capital to achieve our mission and give the private sector access to our capabilities to achieve their purpose as well. We will also seize the opportunity presented through investing in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises as a means to overcome poverty and injustice. As part of CARE Canada’s Strategic Plan, CARE Canada is exploring how we can partner with market-based partners and approaches to influence change and achieve shared objectives of ending poverty and injustice.
Additionally, the Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer must have a keen interest and understanding of what a future-fit and data-savvy digital environment looks like for CARE to support our teams in their digital transformation now and in the future.
Revenue Generation and Leveraging Market-Based Approaches for Revenue and Impact (55%)
- Lead a multi-year plan to diversify CARE Canada’s revenue channels by deepening and widening our ‘relational’ funding from institutional, private, and philanthropic partners, as follows:
- Developing and diversifying our institutional funding partners in Canada and beyond;
- Strengthening and increasing our support from Canada’s philanthropic community, including individuals, foundations, and corporations;
- Lead efforts for CARE to develop and sustain meaningful partnerships with the private sector and others through the application of market-based approaches, to achieve our objective of ending poverty and injustice; and
- Providing oversight and accountability for the multi-year revenue pipeline that drives our success through this decade.
- Strategic oversight of the development and management of major gift prospects through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycle to facilitate realization of philanthropic gifts.
- Strategic oversight of the development and implementation of strategies for planned giving (bequests, charitable gift annuities, life insurance, etc).
- Provide leadership and support to volunteer fundraising individuals and committees engaged in events or initiatives that further our mission.
- Analyze trends and lead in the identification of and building relationships with new sources of funding, leveraging new and/or transformative partnerships at scale, leveraging others within the
CARE Confederation, to expand CARE Canada’s portfolio of marketbased approaches.
- In support of the Humanitarian Coalition (Canada) and joint appeal fundraising, ensure coordination within CARE Canada’s revenue, marketing and program teams, as well as with the CEO, who represents CARE Canada on the HC Board.
Marketing, Communications and Annual Giving (20%)
- Strategic oversight of the design, implementation and regular review of CARE’s annual giving fundraising program, including direct mail, telemarketing, online fundraising, donor acquisition and monthly giving.
- Creation and ongoing oversight of and accountability for a funder and donor data and analytics capability that drives multi-year revenue generation, comprehensive planning and analysis, and best-in-class funder and donor relationship management and stewardship.
- Drive a branding strategy that supports CARE Canada’s revenue generation, advocacy, public education and outreach and program initiatives.
- Understand, communicate and positively reinforce the organization’s values, policies, guidelines, and practices. Strategic oversight of organizational brand standards to communicate and enforce brand execution and consistency.
- Oversight of brand representation and adherence across in-house advertising, graphic design, social media, direct mail, website, publications and all internal and external communication.
- Oversight of internal communication that reinforces and advances our values, mission and Community of Work strategic priority.
- Oversight of crisis communications and reputational vulnerabilities as needed.
Coaching, People and Thought Leadership and Strategic Oversight (15%)
- Reports directly to the President/CEO and works with the Chief Program Officer and Chief Operations Officer to develop revenue generation and marketing and communications strategies that ensure we achieve the aspirations of our Strategic Plan.
- Recruits, retains and manages top talent, including the following: identifying; hiring; inspiring, mentoring and motivating; determining individual and team targets; monitoring and evaluating Unit team members; undertaking and overseeing annual performance targets and appraisals; recruiting and retaining Canada’s best for CARE; upskilling and retraining staff in accordance with the Strategic Plan. Ensures that CARE Canada has and retains the top talent we need to achieve the impact we seek in the world.
- Champions diversity, equity, and inclusion within ways of working and across the organization to live CARE Canada’s values, vision, and mission.
- Responsible for annual planning and budgeting.
- Accountable for results in this portfolio, including achievement of annual budget and revenue and expenses targets set and approved by the Board of Directors
Board Engagement (10%)
- Work closely with the Board as a whole, Board Committees and individual Directors, as required, including the regular reporting of plans, initiatives, outcomes, results and impact.
- Attend Board and Committee meetings as required and requested, to discuss activities, outcomes and impact of the Unit.
- Work with individual Directors as necessary to promote their participation in raising funds for and the profile of CARE Canada.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher education level
- Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience as a senior leader at the executive level, with reporting responsibilities to a Board of Directors and Board Committees;
- Success, experience and proven ability to effectively articulate a mission, strategic vision, values and brand of an organization with a wide range of internal & external stakeholders;
- Minimum 7 years previous revenue development experience (at least 5 years in a senior leadership position) with a major national charity, including experience with institutional, philanthropic and private sector partners, possibilities and potential, or with a national organization that has multiple revenue channels across a number of sources, including institutional and philanthropic;
- Proven effective ability to work in a diplomatic, multi-national environment and undertake complex negotiations to attain common objectives;
- Experience in or full understanding of the dynamics of multi-level organizations (e.g. international confederations or similar);
- General knowledge of emergent, current and established revenue generation and fundraising principles and techniques for Canadian NGO’s, including major gifts, direct response, digital applications, data management and analysis, etc.
- An understanding of Canada’s philanthropic community;
- Ability and motivation to solicit, cultivate and close funder, donor and ‘investor’ solicitations and offerings, including institutional, philanthropic and private market solicitations and proposals;
- Successful track record in establishing organizational brands amongst a wide and competitive marketplace;
- Proven, successful leadership in corporate, foundation, and individual fund development through an array of channels and approaches;
- Solid understanding of principles of general, project and personnel management and sound practices in each;
- General knowledge of gender equality theory and programs;
- Proven budgeting and financial management acumen;
- Advanced knowledge and use of standard office computer applications.
- Knowledge of current international development theories and practice;
- Experience with the emergent area of market-based approaches and innovative approaches to private sector partnerships in the achievement of shared objectives;
- Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or a similar CRM platform an asset;
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, in French, is an asset.
